Chondrus crispus No.1 (Irish Moss); Bracy Cove, Maine

Chondrus crispus (Irish Moss) is an edible seaweed that grows below the tideline on rocky terrain along the coast of Maine. It is the source of carageenan, a thickening additive for foods. If you've eaten ice cream, you've probably eaten Irish Moss! This specimen was washed ashore at Bracy Cove.
