The Bluffs, Bar Harbor, Maine; May 29, 2011 (Beachcombing series No.7)
A typical day of Maine beachcombing in late May: three Rock Crab (Cancer irroratus, called peekytoe crab by seafood marketers), Green Crab (Carcinus maenas), Blue Mussel (Mytilus edulis), Green Sea Urchin (Strongylocentrotus drobachiensis), fishing rope, birch bark (Betula papyrifera), sea glass, Periwinkle (Littorina littorea), Knotted Wrack (Ascophyllum nodosum), rusty metal, and clusters of Waved Whelk egg cases (Buccinum undatum), which look like translucent seaweed but feel like Tyvek.
