Darren Ranco, PhD, anthropologist, photographed at the Hudson Museum, Orono. Dr. Ranco holds a Penobscot canoe paddle (ca.1900) and stands before a birch bark canoe (ca.1888). The modern pack basket is by Gabriel Frey. Together, the paddle, basket and canoe represent the essential travel gear of his ancestors. Dr. Ranco is a citizen/member of the Penobscot Nation, Associate Professor of Anthropology, Chair of Native American Programs and Coordinator of Native American Research at the University of Maine, and a team leader of the Sustainability Solutions Initiative’s Emerald Ash Borer project. His research focuses on environmental justice, particularly the ways in which indigenous communities resist environmental destruction and protect cultural resources.
